Based on over 20 years of experience in the nuclear industry, environmental sciences, public health, and regulatory arena, my workshops train scientists, engineers, health care leaders, communicators, and managers to communicate effectively about complex scientific issues such as environmental, safety, and health risks. This training is enhanced by

  • an in-depth understanding of science and technology
  • extensive training background
  • real-life examples
  • proven training techniques.

The modularized sessions are based on the book, Risk Communication: A Handbook for Communicating Environmental, Safety, and Health Risks, co-authored with Andrea McMakin. Example training topics include:

  • Evaluating different approaches
  • Understanding basic principles
  • Understanding your audience’s needs
  • Building on an organization’s strengths and minimizing weaknesses to effectively communicate risk
  • Determining appropriate communication mechanisms
  • Developing a risk communication plan
  • Working with the public
  • Evaluating risk communication efforts
  • Maximizing the value of risk communication methods, such as information materials, face-to-face communication, pictorial representations, public participation, Internet applications, and risk modeling.

Sessions can range from as little as 2 hours to as much as three days, depending on the needs of the organization. Students learn through a combination of lecture and practical, hands-on exercises.

Examples of clients include

  • professional societies such as the Air and Waste Management Association, Society for Technical Communication, and Society for Women Engineers
  • research organizations such as the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Los Alamos National Laboratory
  • public agencies and institutes such as the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency and Florida Public Health Leadership Institute
  • government agencies such as the Washington State Department of Ecology and the U.S. Air Force
  • private companies.
